Sparrow day - great weather, nice temperature and clear. When I arrived, sparrows weren't very active and park visitors were too active. Continued to bird slowly all around the refuge office area while waiting for later in the day. Eventually ran across Rob Bielawski at the old septic field along the back parking lot, watching the lark sparrow; shortly followed by good looks at clay-colored sparrow and others.

Well-seen and photographed; Rob Bielawski spotted it, also watched and photographed at the same time. Lovely but subtle. Pinkish bill, upper mandible dark-toned on top. Overall appearance quite pale and more bronze-buff, less rusty brown-toned than most other sparrows (including young chipping, recently seen, photographed and studied for comparison.) Contrasting silvery gray nape collar; pale eyebrow and thin dark "mustache" bordering contrasting white malar stripe; dark eyeline behind eye but not continuing forwards of eye; pale lores. Buffy cheek and beautiful streaky crown with pale center complete the contrasty head pattern.

    Details

Largish distinctive sparrow with bold harlequin-patterned head and facial markings in rust, buff, black and white, as seen earlier this year here at Back Bay several times. This one appeared to have a wound on the right side of its head in several of my photos, which I hadn't noticed. Also seen and likely much better photographed by Rob Bielawski at the same time.

I was surprised to see him creeping around a tree trunk above the sparrow flock and with several yellow-rumps nearby, at sunset. Black and white warbler, heavily streaked and striped, creeping around and along small tree trunks in its nuthatch-like way.
