    Details

    **RARE; first county eBird record

found by a marsh sparrow researcher with the SHARP program (possibly Bri Benvenute); first seen 10 May 2016; sighted again on 7 Jun

observed this morning moving in and out of a stand of Common Reeds (Phragmites australis) located behind a small pool on the north side of Eldridge Rd., about 100 meters (or 3 utility poles) west of Webhannet Dr.; the bird was no more than 30 meters from the road

please note that walking into the marsh (part of the Rachel Carson NWR) is not allowed and playback should not be used

a large rail with black-centered back and scapular feathers with gray/buff margins; rust-colored chest and neck clear to lower face; barred flanks; limited gray around red eye; medium-sized bill with dark upper mandible (save for yellow base), mostly yellow lower mandible, and dark tip

the bird gave loud, mostly evenly spaced-out clacking calls (at times quickening pace), repeated in series numerous times during my observation; overall tempo seems to fit KIRA (based on reviewing this article by Nathan Pieplow)

identification confirmed by Louis Bevier, who consulted James Maley (who has studied Clapper and King Rails extensively)
