Sparrow Visits Vermont

First Golden-crowned Sparrow in Vermont. Photo by Peter Manship.

Norton and Marlene Latourelle saw a sparrow that looked an awful lot like a western species called a Golden-crowned Sparrow. Norton called his friend Ernie Franzgrote to tell him that they had a possible Golden-crowned Sparrow feeding beneath the feeder at their house.  From their description he concluded they were probably right.

Ernie called Sue Wetmore and she arrived at the Latourelle’s place shortly after he did. The four of them got close looks at the bird. Indeed, a first state record for Vermont!

Sue immediately jotted down some notes and sent an official report to the Vermont Bird Records Committee. Word quickly spread and by today, thanks to the graciousness of the Latourelle’s, many birders have had a look, and captured some great photographs of the star sparrow.
