Celebrating the National Parks Centennial

Crater Lake National Park

100 years ago today President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Parks Service Organic Act creating the new agency and mandating “… it conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Klamath Bird Observatory has played an important role in our regional NPS Klamath Network Inventory & Monitoring effort. Since 2008 we have carried out landbird monitoring in six national park units in northern California and southern Oregon. This year our monitoring efforts took us to Crater Lake National Park and Oregon Caves National Monument.

To celebrate the centennial the National Parks Service is encouraging people to get out and #FindYourPark by offering free admissions to all 412 national parks from August 25-28th!
