Maine Birder Band's third year

2011 Maine Birder Band

Since 2009, the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Maine Birder Band program has helped to fund the Department's Bird Group efforts through voluntary donations by birders in 26 states and maritime provinces of Canada.  Wildlife agencies from several other states have inquired about Maine's program.  Afterall, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!  Are you sporting the 2011 Maine Birder Band on your binocular strap?

The Maine Birder Band program is intended to provide the Maine birding community an opportunity to support MDIF&W's non-game bird conservation efforts. Just as hunters and anglers fund Department efforts through license purchases, now birder's can become a participating constituency by demonstrating their willingness to fund non-game bird conservation.

Through a $20 contribution, Maine Birder Band participants get "banded" (receive an officially registered and individually numbered band).  Just like a migratory bird band, each band has a phone number so that someone finding the band, and the misplaced object that the band is on, can call MDIF&W where we will work hard to re-unite you with your lost optics, camera, or whatever gear you choose to put the band on.

To date, Maine Birder Band funds have supported MDIF&W efforts to study distributions and abundance of coastal marsh sparrow species; survey remaining grasshopper sparrow habitats, and launch Maine eBird.  Maine Birder Band contributions provide a vital source of match that allows the State of Maine to access federal conservation dollars.  Thank you for supporting the Maine Birder Band program!
