The Bird Records committee of the SOH is pleased to announce two new documents for use by the public:

  • An updated checklist of all the birds of Hispaniola, and
  • A Rare and Vagrant Bird reporting form.

The files are located in the “Files” area of the SOH Yahoo Groups page : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sociedadornitologicahispaniola/files/ .

The files are named:

1. Checklist-SOH-08.xls

2. Comite Registro-Formulario.pdf

Or, can be requested in an email to info@vtecostudies.org.

To report a rare or vagrant species, fill out the form and send it back to the Bird Records committee coordinator, stevebrauning @ yahoo.com.

To report a species, please consider the following:

a. Species that need to be reported:

  i.  Anything not on the list

ii. Anything listed as R (rare), V (vagrant), or extirpated.

iii. species listed as M (migrant), when not in the migratory season

iv. species that are observed significantly out of their normal distribution or habitat.

b.  To receive the report, the committee needs:

  i.  a photo that provides clear identification

ii. in adition to the photo, we need the form filled out as completely as possible.

iii. In absence of a photo, more detailed descriptions are needed, as well as the name of a second observer.

We hope that these efforts will improve the knowledge of the avian fauna of the island of Hispaniola.
