This month’s eBirder of the month challenge, sponsored by Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, is all about birding on Global Big Day! May 14th is the second Global Big Day, a global event bringing birders together around the world for a single day of team birding. In last year’s inaugural Global Big Day we noted more than 6,000 species together as a global birding community—can we surpass that this year?! The eBirder of the month will be drawn from eBirders who submit 5 or more complete no-X checklists on May 14th. Winners will be notified by the 10th of the following month.

On May 9, 2015, more than 14,000 people joined together in the biggest day of birding the world has ever seen. On May 14th, the Global Big Day is returning, and we want to know what you can find! Wherever you are on the planet, just a few minutes around your house or in a nearby park can make a difference. Whether you spend 5 minutes out there, or five hours, we want to hear about it. Can you help put your county, state, or country on the map? You can learn more at the Global Big Day HQ, and stay tuned at that link on the day itself to keep up with sightings coming in at near real-time from around the world.

If you’re curious how to best join in the fun, stay tuned for additional information in the next couple weeks as we approach the day itself, and check our our article on taking part. We’ll see you out there!

Each month we will feature a new eBird challenge and set of selection criteria. The monthly winners will each receive a new ZEISS Conquest HD 8×42 binocular.

Carl Zeiss Sports Optics is a proven leader in sports optics and is the official optics sponsor for eBird. “Carl Zeiss feels strongly that by partnering with the Cornell Lab we can provide meaningful support for their ability to carry out their research, conservation, and education work around the world,” says Mike Jensen,  President of Carl Zeiss Sports Optics, North America. “The Cornell Lab is making a difference for birds, and from the highest levels of our company we’re committed to promoting birding and the Lab’s work, so there’s a great collaboration. eBird is a truly unique and synergistic portal between the Lab and birders, and we welcome the opportunity to support them both.”
