eBird Canada now has county and district lists!

Willet: Russell Cannings

After a couple of years of technical difficulties and other unforeseen delays, we are happy to announce that eBird Canada now has county and district layers in all parts of its operations.  This will make mapping a new location easier and will allow data analysis and listing at the county/district level.  For more information, click the headline link or photo!

The new county and district function in eBird Canada will make data input easier and data output more flexible.  For instance, you’ll be able to immediately zoom to the county boundaries when mapping a new location.  You’ll also be able to generate bargraph checklists for any district in the country, just like you can have been able to do for provinces and locations.  And if you want to know your life list for Haldimand-Norfolk County, ON, or year list from Metro Vancouver, BC, the answers are just a click away.  And, over the long term, the new county feature will let us more accurately filter unusual reports, since we can create filters custom-made for each county and district.  And since those filters create the data entry checklists, you will have a shorter, more concise list of birds to deal with when entering data.

We realize that these political boundaries don’t always match the birding region boundaries used by eBirders across Canada, and some of the names aren’t particularly evocative.  There also may be some glitches in the early phases of this new feature, so feel free to send us feedback and suggestions.
